Cancha de Carreras, at over 4.000 m, is a mythical plain. Here, time stands still and your body is tuned for the summit.
At almost 5.000 m, the summit of Leonera connects you with El Plomo, the glacier and a limitless horizon.
We begin our journey early in the morning with a transfer from Santiago to the La Parva ski resort. From there, we begin our ascent along high mountain trails, crossing Laguna Piuquenes and skirting Cerro Pintor. At a steady pace, we gain altitude and enjoy the mountain scenery. After several hours of hiking, we reach Cancha de Carreras, a plateau at over 4.000 meters above sea level that will serve as our base camp for our summit attempt. We set up camp, have dinner, and rest under a starry sky.
We woke up early to begin the final ascent. We advanced along ridges and slopes that led us to the summit of Cerro Leonera. As the sun rose, the surroundings transformed: glaciers, valleys, and peaks like El Plomo, Altar, and La Paloma accompanied us visually. We reached the summit at 4.954 meters above sea level, where we took some time to celebrate, contemplate, and record this achievement. We then began the descent back to Cancha de Carreras, where we spent a second restful night.
We woke up calmly, had breakfast, and broke camp. We began the leisurely descent, taking advantage of the opportunity to once again enjoy the natural surroundings and the silence of the mountains. We retrace the Painter's Route until we reached La Parva, where our transport was waiting for us to return to Santiago in the afternoon.
Day 1 – Ascent to the Race Course:Same as the 3-day itinerary. Arrival, camp, rest.Day 2 – Summit and full descent:Very early ascent to the summit of Leonera. After reaching the summit, we return to Cancha de Carreras, break camp, and continue the direct descent to La Parva. From there, transfer back to Santiago in the afternoon.* Itinerary recommended only for acclimatized and physically fit people.
